- Postpartum hair loss usually starts 2 to 4 months after giving birth.
- It is normal and usually recovers within 6 to 12 months.
- Have your iron and thyroid checked if it lasts long or is very heavy.
- Gentle care and rest help your scalp, and you.
Why does your hair fall out after giving birth?
During pregnancy, high oestrogen levels keep your hair in the growth phase for longer. You lose less hair than usual and your hair feels fuller. After birth, hormone levels drop quickly. All those hairs then enter the resting phase at the same time and fall out a few months later. So you mainly lose the hair you kept “extra” during pregnancy.
When does it start and how long does it last?
Shedding usually starts two to four months after giving birth. It peaks around four months and then gradually eases. For most women the hair is back to its normal density after six to twelve months. You will often see short new hairs growing at the hairline by then.
When should you see a doctor?
- If the shedding does not ease after a year.
- If you see bald patches.
- If you feel very tired, cold or have other symptoms: iron deficiency or a thyroid problem is more common after giving birth.
What helps?
- Patience: the shedding usually stops by itself. Nothing can fully prevent it.
- Nutrition: eat enough protein, iron and vegetables. Consider continuing your pregnancy vitamins, in consultation with your doctor.
- Gentle care: a mild shampoo, a wide-tooth comb and little heat. Avoid tight ponytails.
- A shorter cut: can make your hair look fuller during this time.
- Rest: easier said than done with a baby, but stress and lack of sleep add to the shedding.
Postpartum-like shedding can also happen after stopping breastfeeding or after a miscarriage. Then too it is usually temporary.
